Why you need a km-to-miles converter
The UK is one of the few countries that measures road distances in miles while most of the world uses kilometres. If you are planning a road trip in Europe, importing a car with a km-only speedometer, or training for a parkrun, you will constantly need to switch between the two. Sat-navs from European manufacturers often default to kilometres, and race distances are always listed in km (5K, 10K, half marathon). This converter saves you from doing the mental arithmetic every time.
How to convert km to miles
One mile is exactly 1.609344 kilometres. That ratio is all you need.
KM to miles
Multiply the kilometre value by 0.621371. For example, 100 km x 0.621371 = 62.14 miles.
Miles to km
Multiply the mile value by 1.609344. For example, 60 miles x 1.609344 = 96.56 km.
Quick mental trick
Multiply km by 5 then divide by 8 for a fast approximation. It is accurate to within 0.5%. So 80 km x 5 / 8 = 50 miles (actual: 49.71 miles).
The conversion formula
The international mile was defined as exactly 1,609.344 metres in 1959 by agreement between the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. This makes the conversion exact. One kilometre equals 1,000 metres, so 1 mile = 1.609344 km. The inverse, 1 km = 0.621371 miles, is the same ratio flipped. The Fibonacci-based shortcut (multiply by 5, divide by 8) works because 5/8 = 0.625, which is remarkably close to the exact 0.621371.
Tips & Best Practices
- →
For a rough estimate, multiply km by 0.6 — it is close enough for most everyday situations
- →
UK speed limits are in mph: 30 in towns, 60 on single carriageways, 70 on motorways — learn the km/h equivalents if you drive in Europe
- →
A 5K parkrun is 3.1 miles, a 10K is 6.2 miles, and a half marathon is 13.1 miles — useful for tracking pace in either unit
- →
Satnav showing km? The numbers will be roughly 60% higher than what you are used to seeing in miles
- →
The marathon distance (42.195 km) was set at the 1908 London Olympics — the course was extended so it could start at Windsor Castle and finish at the royal box
