When do you need this converter?
US recipes use Fahrenheit, UK ovens use Celsius and Gas Marks. American weather forecasts say 95°F when it's 35°C outside. Science papers use Kelvin. This converter handles all three and includes a Gas Mark reference table so you can follow any recipe without a second lookup.
How to convert °F to °C
Subtract 32, then multiply by 5/9. To go the other way, multiply by 9/5 then add 32.
°F to °C
(°F − 32) × 5/9 = °C. Example: (350 − 32) × 5/9 = 176.7°C.
°C to °F
(°C × 9/5) + 32 = °F. Example: 200°C × 1.8 + 32 = 392°F.
Quick estimate
Subtract 30 then halve it for °C from °F. It's an approximation but close enough for weather.
Conversion formula
The Celsius scale sets 0° at water's freezing point and 100° at boiling. Fahrenheit sets them at 32° and 212°. The 32-degree offset plus the 9/5 ratio come from these different reference points. Kelvin = °C + 273.15.
Tips & Best Practices
- →
Gas Mark 4 = 180°C = 350°F — the universal 'moderate oven' for baking
- →
UK weather is always in °C — 30°C is a hot summer day, 10°C is a cool autumn day
- →
Body temperature: 37°C (98.6°F) normal, 38°C (100.4°F) fever threshold
- →
Fridge: 1–4°C (34–39°F). Freezer: -18°C (0°F)
