Why you need a cm-to-inches converter

The UK is stuck between two systems. Your passport lists your height in centimetres, your driving licence doesn't mention height at all, and your nan will insist you're five foot eleven until the day she dies. Online shopping for clothes, bikes, or furniture often means switching between cm and inches depending on whether the brand is European or American. This converter does the maths so you don't have to hold the calculation in your head while browsing a sizing chart.

How to convert cm to inches

One inch is exactly 2.54 centimetres. That is the only number you need.

01

CM to inches

Divide the centimetre value by 2.54. For example, 180 cm / 2.54 = 70.87 inches.

02

Inches to cm

Multiply the inch value by 2.54. For example, 66 inches x 2.54 = 167.64 cm.

03

Getting feet and inches

Once you have total inches, divide by 12. The whole number is feet, the remainder is inches. So 70.87 inches = 5 feet 10.87 inches, which you'd round to 5 ft 11 in conversation.

The conversion formula

inches = cm / 2.54

The inch was officially defined as exactly 2.54 centimetres in 1959 by international agreement. This makes the conversion exact, not an approximation. To go from inches to cm, multiply by 2.54. To break inches into feet and inches, divide by 12 — there are 12 inches in a foot. The converter also shows metres for convenience (just divide cm by 100).

Tips & Best Practices

  • For a rough mental conversion, divide cm by 2.5 — it's close enough for everyday estimates

  • UK clothing sizes often list measurements in inches (chest, waist), while European sizes use cm — check which system the brand uses before ordering

  • TV and monitor sizes are always measured in inches diagonally, even in metric countries

  • If someone tells you their height in feet and inches and you need cm: multiply feet by 30.48, add inches times 2.54

  • The height reference table covers 150 cm to 200 cm — the range for most adults — so you can quickly look up any height
